If you are of a certain age and can’t spare another 20 years to fully assimilate to the full version of Photoshop then this is for you. It does all most would want to do. I’ve been using it since version 3. However if you have version 9 – don’t bother upgrading – the extras in 10 are not worth it.
The old problems with the organiser are still present and it is very clunky even though I close down all other programmes and have 6gb memory and lots of processing power. I do note that when I am using it my router is very active, even though I have “feedback” to Adobe disabled. One thing I would recommend though is getting a good manual if you are new to Elements. However it is most definately, not for the beginner and I do not say that as someone who is less than talented. There is no Manual to this very, very complicated software, one has to buy a book to help in the understanding of the most basic procedures.
There are guides and DVDs in the monthly Photographic Journals giving advice on how to operate Adobe Elements which leads one to the opinion that one must have a large amount of ability to be able to deal with this product. I have tried really hard to alter photographs but every time I give up in pure frustration.
Both the Software and the guide book I bought are a complete waste of time to a person like me who is new to DSLR photography. You can click on any image and use the Properties window to display full image metadata. Two new features have been added to the Organiser: Object Search and the ability to tag faces in photos using your Facebook Friends list.
The Object Search function can be used to locate pictures containing a specific element; for example, if you want to locate shots of flowers or a favourite pet.
You start by selecting a picture containing the object you want to search for. The simpler and more easily classified the object, the shorter the search time will be.
Then click on Object Search and drag the marquee until it encompasses the object. Clicking on Search Object below the marquee begins the search. Our search based on the image of a lupin flower yielded varying results. While it certainly identified shots containing flowers, it also roped in a lot of shots of quite different subjects birds, rocks, waterfalls, clouds, ice formations, to name a few.
Searching on a picture of a puffin provided a better set of matches. Retrieved images are rated on the basis of resemblance to the original and ranked accordingly. Edited versions of the original are often ranked well below it, as shown above.
However, the interface appeared to be simple and straightforward to use. The system relies on face recognition technology and uses the tags you have already set up in Facebook, saving you the trouble of manually tagging shots. New Editing Functions As in the previous versions, Photoshop 10 provides both full and Guided editing options, the latter leading users step-by-step to achieve a defined objective.
New additions to the editing palette include the Smart Brush, which comes with 30 new patterns and effects for adding to pictures. You begin by selecting an image in the Organiser and clicking on the Fix tab then selecting Edit Photos. Next click on the Smart Brush icon circled in red below and select Textures from the drop-down menu. If there are more steps, then you may see another set of instructions. If you click one, up pops the Adobe Elements Inspiration Browser, a mini-program that lets you watch tutorials, as you can see in Figure You need a Photoshop. The first time you start the Inspiration Browser, you may see a license agreement for yet another program: Adobe AIR, which lets other programs show you content stored online without you having to launch a web browser and navigate to a website.

Some are by well-known Elements gurus, but anyone can submit a tutorial for the Inspiration Browser. You can also click one of the column headings to see the available tutorials arranged by title, author, difficulty, date posted, category, type video or PDF , or the average star rating people have given it.
The Inspiration Browser is a great resource and may well give you most of the Elements help you need beyond this book. Elements has a couple of really wonderful features to help you avoid making permanent mistakes: the Undo command and the Undo History panel. No matter where you are in Elements, you can almost always change your mind about what you just did. These keyboard shortcuts are great for toggling changes on and off while you decide whether you want to keep them.
You can only go back sequentially. You can also hop to a given spot in the list by clicking the place where you want to go instead of using the slider. Slide the pointer down to redo your work. Just drag the slider up and watch your changes disappear one by one as you go. Be careful, though: You can back up only as many steps as Elements is set to remember. If Elements runs slowly on your machine, then reducing the number of history states it remembers try 20 may speed things up a bit.
Always, always, always make a copy of your image and work on that instead. Name the duplicate and then click OK in the dialog box. Find the original image and click its Close button the X or the red dot. Choose Photoshop. Saving Your Work has more about saving.
